SlideUnderV2 Update, Lenovo Progress & A New Crossbar Idea
Share
I’ve temporarily added the SlideUnderV2 Macbook Pro 16" to the lineup. The design phase is complete, and starting next week I’ll begin testing tolerances to validate whether this version can be sold as is.
SlideUnderV2 – What Changed
The original SlideUnderV1 for MacBook Pro 16" was designed around a smaller printer, which limited the maximum height to 25 cm. With V2, I’ve increased the height to 30 cm.
That extra 5 cm makes a big difference in vertical tolerances and results in a noticeably more stable base.
Additional improvements from V2 coming to this model:
- Adjusted screw mounting holes with washers
- Larger ventilation openings
- Printed with larder nozzle for added strength
- And of course—because it’s a V2—80 Gbps / 240 W ports
Once tolerance testing is complete, I’ll decide whether V2 is ready for release in its current form.
Here is a comparison old vs new.
Lenovo Models – Current Status
I’ve finished the Lenovo E16 model. It’s fully functional, but I haven’t published it yet.
I’ll wait until the E14 version is also ready before putting both online. Development on the E14 will start after the V2 MacBook Pro 16" has been approved.
Since Lenovo laptops use Intel chips, these models are heavier and will be priced accordingly.
As of now, I’m still reasonably on track for the Lenovo timeline. I’m aiming to start work on the T14 Gen 5 / Gen 6 models toward the end of this month.
New Idea: Solving Desks With Crossbars
A recent custom Lenovo E16 request sparked a new idea.
For that customer, the desk had a crossbar running through the middle. To solve this, I added legs and inserted the laptop at a 6–7° downward angle, ensuring the back of the laptop cleared the crossbar.
I’ve noticed that customers with crossbars usually run into two issues:
- The laptop can’t sit flush with the desk edge, or
- They have to mount it sideways
Neither of these matches how the product is intended to be used.
I’m currently exploring two possible solutions:
1. Crossbar Edition
A dedicated version with an integrated angled base:
- 2 cm high base at the front
- 5 cm high base at the back
This would be a single-piece solution designed specifically for desks with a crossbar.
2. Crossbar Add-On
A separate add-on base with feet that can be attached to an existing SlideUnder.
This would allow customers to adapt their current setup without replacing the full mount.
Both approaches have their pros and cons, and I’ll be brainstorming further to decide which direction makes the most sense to pursue.
More updates soon.
